Sencha Green Tea Green tea is one of the healthiest substances in the world, due in large part to the many antioxidants found inside tea leaves. There are a wide range of different types of green tea, with one of the most common being Sencha green tea. This is also commonly referred to as Japanese green tea. The following will provide an in-depth look at Sencha green tea, including its lengthy history, uses and health benefits.

History of Sencha Green Tea

Despite its heavy use in modern day Japan and the rest of the world, accounting for around 70 percent of all tea created in Japan, the Sencha green tea leaf was first believed to have been invented in Kyoto in 1738 by Nagatani Soen. This makes the tea leaf one of the more recent leaf discoveries in Japan. While it was discovered all the way back in the early 18th century, it didn't go into full production and development until the 18th century. Towards the conclusion of the 19th century, it started to be exported heavily to the United States, which is one of the reasons as to why the leaf became so popular all around the world. During the early 20th century, Sencha green tea was actually the second largest export by Japan, sitting only behind silk. Not only is Sencha green tea prized for its rich and fresh taste, it's also known to contain lots of antioxidants that help in improving a persons health in a variety of ways. Since the onset of the 20th century, Sencha green tea has remained as one of the most popular types of green tea around, as the taste is pleasing and the benefits of using the substance are numerous. The production of Sencha green tea begins by picking fresh leaves and quickly taking them to factories in order to steam them before the oxidation process progresses too much. Following this, the leaves are rolled and dried out several times to the point where there is only around five percent of humidity left within them. However, even after the leaves have been rolled out and dried, they are still largely unfinished. What has been created from the leaves is shipped to wholesalers. These wholesalers determine if the product is turned into Sencha. The rolled up tea leaves first go through a sorting process. During this process, the buds, twigs and powder are removed and the final portion of the drying takes place, which reduces the amount of humidity contained within the leaves from five percent to around 3 percent. The liquid created from these leaves generally consists of a yellow and green complexion with a more subtle taste. However, this all depends on how the leaves are steamed. If the steaming process lasts for a lengthier period of time, around 45-50 seconds, the tea will be a bit darker in color and will have a somewhat stronger taste and a slightly less aromatic smell.

Types of Sencha

As with most types of tea, there are various types of Sencha to choose from. Overall, there are eight total types of Sencha green tea, all of which contain slightly different characteristics. These include Jo Sencha, Toku Jo Sencha, Hachijuhachiya Sencha, Kabusecha, Asamushi, Chumushi, Fukamushi and Shincha. Shincha is largely characterized by the fact that it is Sencha picked in the very first month of the year, which also marks the first picked month of the leaves. Due to it being the earliest tea of the year, it is seasonal and can only be found during the first half of the year. Kabusecha is a type of Sencha that is grown directly under shade. Though it might be hard to imagine, this small change in where the plant is grown makes for a sweeter tea and less amino acids. This plant is also marked by a lighter color than other types of Sencha.

Sencha Green Tea Health Benefits

Sencha green tea provides a wide variety of health benefits to those that use it, even when used in other ways than simply drinking the liquid. Many of the health benefits found in Sencha green tea are similar in nature to those found among other types of green tea. For instance, Sencha green tea is a natural way to keep your teeth and gums healthy, as the product contains fluoride. Unlike the fluoride found in toothpaste, the fluoride in Sencha green tea is entirely natural, making it more effective at providing you with its health benefits. When drinking the tea, your teeth will typically become much healthier, signified by a strengthening of the enamel and a reduction in the amount of cavities that you receive. It can even aid in the reduction of plaque buildup. In essence, this plant can be used in times when you don't have toothpaste and need to brush your teeth to keep them healthy. One of the best health benefits of Sencha green tea is that it helps to keep a persons heart and body healthy by lowering their cholesterol levels and their blood pressure. Lowering both of these metrics is essential in reducing the chances of suffering from a stroke or a heart attack. Anyone that has diabetes or someone that believes that they may soon develop diabetes should heavily consider drinking Sencha green tea, as it is well known to keep blood sugar levels relatively stable. This tea may also help in the prevention of certain types of cancer. There's also the fact that Sencha green tea, like all other green teas, acts as a mild form of a stimulant, leading to an increase in focus, as well as a decrease in the amount of anxiety that you're experiencing, which could prove hugely beneficial. Sencha green tea is known to have exceedingly high levels of antioxidants, while also working as an anti-viral and anti-inflammatory substance, which is why it helps to prevent so many diseases and illnesses. To understand just how powerful the antioxidants within tea are, it's important to take a look at Vitamins C and E. Both of these are antioxidants that are necessary vitamins in a persons diet in order to keep them healthy. However, the antioxidants found within Sencha green tea are many magnitudes more powerful than both Vitamins C and E. To put a number to it, the antioxidants within Sencha tea are well over 20 times more powerful than the E vitamin and close to 200 hundred times stronger than that of the C vitamin. These antioxidants are essential in keeping your immune system as healthy as possible.
